Oriental Roaches Control in Florida

Oriental Roach

What Are Oriental Roaches?

Despite its name, the oriental cockroach is thought to have originated in Africa. This species belongs to the larger species of cockroach, with a length that ranges from about 1 to 1.25 inches. Also, they are called “water bugs” or “black beetle cockroaches,” in reference to their glossy dark bodies and their preference for damp, dark areas.

Oriental Roaches Identification

Oriental Roaches are larger roaches, measuring about 1 to 1.25 inches in length. They have a shiny, dark brown or black appearance and are often mistaken for beetles due to their dark color and glossy bodies.

These roaches are known for their strong odor and can be particularly difficult to eliminate due to their preference for moist, secluded areas. Unlike other roaches, Oriental Roaches are less likely to be seen climbing walls because they are not as agile.
An Oriental Roach infestation can quickly escalate if not addressed promptly. Signs of infestation include:

Life Cycle

The life cycle of an oriental cockroach goes from egg, nymph, and adult. An average female oriental roach will produce around eight egg capsules in a lifetime. Each egg capsule (ootheca) holds roughly 16 eggs that are vertically positioned two by two in the egg case.

The egg capsule is carried from 12 hours to five days and then deposited in a warm sheltered environment. Nymphs go through seven molts before becoming adults, which takes approximately one year. An adult oriental roach can live from 34 to 180 days, and pairing takes place at any season.

1

Eggs

Female American roaches lay their eggs in a strong and purse-shaped egg case (ootheca). Each female typically produces one egg case per month for ten months, laying an average of 16 eggs in each ootheca. The female lays an ootheca close to food, often attaching it with a mouth secretion. The egg case is brown when deposited and turns black in a day or two. It is about 8 mm long and 5 mm high.

2

Nymph

The nymphal stage begins when the egg hatches and ends with the emergence of the adult. The American roach first instar is white upon hatching and after that turns a light gray color in the course of its molt. The next instars of cockroach nymphs are white and then become reddish-brown, with the posterior margins of the thoracic segments and abdominal being a darker color. Wings are not present in the nymphal stages. The total developmental period from egg to adult is approximately 600 days.

3

Adult

The adult American roach is reddish brown, bearing a pale brown or yellow band around the edge of the pronotum. The males are longer than the females because their wings extend 4 to 8 mm beyond the tip of the abdomen. Both males and females have a pair of long, jointed cerci at the end of their abdomens. The male cockroaches have cerci with 18 to 19 segments while the females’ cerci have 13 to 14 segments. The males have also a pair of styli between the cerci that are absent in females.

Health Risks

Oriental Roaches pose several health risks due to their unsanitary habits. They are known to spread bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli, which can cause food poisoning and other gastrointestinal issues.

Additionally, their presence can exacerbate allergies and asthma, particularly in children and sensitive individuals. The strong odor they produce can also make living conditions unpleasant.

Nymphs and adult roaches both seek warm, dark moist areas with a temperature of at least 70 degrees. However, under the right conditions, they may survive even lower temperatures.

German Roach vs Oriental Roach

When comparing German roaches and Oriental roaches, several key differences can help in identifying them.

German Roach

German Cockroach

German Roaches are smaller, typically measuring about 1/2 to 5/8 inches in length. They are light brown to tan in color and are easily recognized by the two dark parallel stripes running down their backs, just behind the head. German roaches are fast-moving and tend to inhabit warm, humid environments, often found in kitchens and bathrooms.

VS

Oriental Roaches

Oriental Roach

Oriental Roaches are larger, generally ranging from 1 to 1 1/4 inches in length. They are dark brown to black and have a shiny, almost oily appearance. Oriental roaches are slower-moving and are often found in cooler, damp environments such as basements, drains, and sewers.
