German Roaches Control in Florida

German Cockroach

What Are German Roaches?

The German roach is one of the most common cockroach species found worldwide. They are unable to survive in locations away from humans or human activity. While German cockroach infestations occur mostly in human-occupied spaces, they are frequently associated with and found in restaurants, food processing plants, hotels, nursing homes, and other institutional facilities. Cold temperatures seem to be the major factor that limits the survival of the German cockroach.

German Roach Identification

Identifying German Roaches involves noting several key characteristics. Adult German Roaches are about 1/2 to 5/8 inches long. They are light brown or tan with two dark parallel stripes running from their heads to the base of their wings. Known for their rapid movement, they often scatter when exposed to light. They have six legs and has a long antennae.

German cockroaches prefer to live in warm, humid places close to food and moisture sources. They are very common in places like kitchens, both residential and commercial, and bathrooms.
Recognizing the signs of a German Roach infestation early is crucial to prevent it from getting out of hand. Look out for:

Life Cycle

German cockroaches have simple metamorphosis which includes three stages, egg, nymph, and adult, which can be completed in a relatively short amount of time. From the production of eggs to the emergence of fully developed adults, the life cycle of a German cockroach can take as short a time as 10 weeks.

Eggs

Just like many other insects, German cockroaches hatch from eggs. Each egg case, or ootheca, contains about 30 to 40 eggs. The female then carries this case until 1 to 2 days before hatching. Depending on the conditions, the average time for development, from egg to adult can range from 54 to 215 days, with an average of about 100 days.

Nymph

Newly hatched German cockroach nymphs are white at first and change to dark brown by the end of a few hours. The nymphs are miniature versions of the adults, but they are smaller and do not have wings. The nymphs develop by molting five to six times before becoming adults. The period between each molt is called an instar. After the final molt, the nymph emerges as a fully developed adult.

Adult

Adult German cockroaches are approximately 11 to 16 millimeters long. They have two pairs of wings; an inner membranous pair is used to perform an occasional gliding flight and an outer harder pair is used as a protective cover. The adult German cockroach typically lives for five to seven months. Adult German cockroaches can live more than a month without food, but will not survive two weeks without water.

Health Risks

More than being just a nuisance, German cockroaches have been reported to be responsible for outbreaks of illness and allergic reactions in many people. Cockroaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, 6 kinds of parasitic worms, and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. As they forage through rotting material or sewage, they can collect germs on the spines of their legs and bodies and later deposit them on food or utensils.

Research has shown that German cockroach allergens cause allergic reactions in people and can cause asthma attacks in those predisposed; especially children. That makes effective German roach control vital.

German Roach vs American Roach

Understanding the differences between German and American roaches can help you identify and handle the infestations most effectively.

German Roach

German Cockroach
German roaches are smaller, usually from 0.5 to 0.6 inches in size, and light brown with a pair of dark parallel stripes running along the length of their back. They are often found in kitchens and bathrooms, where they seek warmth, moisture, and food.

VS

American Roaches

American Roach
American cockroaches are much larger—between 1.5 and 2 inches long. They are reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-eight pattern on their heads. Unlike German roaches, American roaches are often found in basements, crawl spaces, and outdoors but can migrate inside in search of food and water.
